What to Watch

Cost Trajectory

Current Na-ion cells cost ~$125/kWh vs LFP at ~$49/kWh (Chinese production). The cost gap is narrowing as Chinese manufacturers scale production. Full LFP cost parity projected by 2026–2027 at the cell level, with $30/kWh modelled by 2045.

Western Manufacturing Risk

Natron and Northvolt's failures highlight the difficulty of building battery companies outside Asia without sustained government support spanning a decade or more. Joint ventures with Asian manufacturers may prove more viable than greenfield Western start-ups.

UK Opportunity

The UK has a distinctive position: world-leading Na-ion research (NEXGENNA/St Andrews), policy support (£452M Battery Innovation Programme), and Faradion's IP — though the latter now sits with Reliance in India. Commercialisation speed is the critical gap.

Application Sweet Spots

Grid-scale ESS (71.8% of Na-ion revenue in 2025), cold-climate storage (Nordic markets), low-speed EVs and micromobility, and data centre backup. Long-range passenger EVs remain lithium's domain for now.
